Nocturne

for bassoon and piano

by Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) - French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher

This arrangement for bassoon and piano was created as part of a larger project to expand representation of women composers in repertoire for bassoon from earlier musical eras and style periods than the present day. Extracting the melody from the solo piano work and performing it on bassoon requires sensitivity to the fluid nature of piano embellishments and interweaving of the melodic line with inner voices and lower accompaniment patterns, all while retaining the long singing lines of the original.
